Aikido Shimbokukai 2024 Midwest Budo Bridge Seminar (In Person & Virtual)

Please join us July 28, 2024, from 9:30 am-1:30 pm Central time for the 2024 Midwest Budo Bridge Seminar. This event will be held at Great Lakes Aikido, 150 Fairway Drive, Suite 156, Vernon Hills, IL and also be live streamed.

This one day event, being held in the Midwest for the first time, will feature instruction in a variety of arts, and hopefully bring together attendees who train in a variety of arts, giving us all the opportunity to experience different training styles and methods, and to work with people who move in ways we are not accustomed to.

All affiliations, levels of experience, and styles of martial arts are welcome to attend!

Our Instructors for this training event will be:

D.J. Lortie Sensei, Karate
Michelle Tate Sensei, Qi Gong
Lisa Tomoleoni Shihan, Aikido

The schedule will be:
9:30 am Lisa Tomoleoni Shihan (Aikido)
10:30 am DJ Lortie Sensei (Karate)
11:30 am Manuel de Joya Sensei (Knife Essentials)
12:30 pm Michelle Tate Sensei (Qi Gong)
1:30-2:00 pm Q & A

We will also be accepting walk-in registrations. Registration for the seminar is US$50 for in person participation and US$25 for virtual participation. For those with financial constraints please let us know as we have some scholarship options available.

A few points of interest-

  1. NO hakama for this event!

  2. Train in keiko gi, sweat pants/t-shirt, tactical wear, street clothes, whatever. Please just ensure you have a belt of some sort.

  3. Please bring wooden tanto or NON-sharp training knife.

  4. Feel free to adapt/refrain from movements to fit your physical condition. If you have any questions please ask the instructor.

  5. The event will consist of four 55 minute classes followed by a 30 minute Q&A session.

There are a variety of options for participation-
- Participate live; in-person training at Great Lakes Aikido, 150 Fairway Drive, Suite 156, Vernon Hills, IL.
- Participate virtually with your dojo mates from your dojo. For those who can gather and train together, please plan to attend the seminar from your dojo! Set up a computer, stream the event, and train!
- Participate virtually on your own from your home, or any location of your choice.

Instructors


Manuel de Joya Sensei, Practical Knife Essentials

Manuel de Joya Sensei’s family hails from Taal, Batangas, Philippines, the home of Barangay Balisong, where the finest balisong knives are made, and where everyone carries the balisong knife. Since his uncles gave him his first balisong and trained him in its use, he honed his skills over 35 years of training in aikido and other martial arts.


D.J. Lortie Sensei, Karate

D.J. Lortie Sensei has been training in the martial arts for 35 years, with 18+ years training in Japan. He is a 6 Dan in Aikido, 4th Dan in Takumakai Aikijujutsu, 1 Dan in JKA Shotokan Karate, and 1 Dan in Judo. He is a graduate of the International Budo University’s 1 year special course.


Michelle Tate Sensei, Qi Gong

“I’ve been doing Aikido for a little bit and hold the rank of 5 dan. I am an instructor at the Abiding Spirit Center. Of equal interest is my work with healing arts - acupuncture, energy work and meditation, as well as becoming certified in various aspects of medical qigong across the years. I use all these modalities in my training and in my healing practice.”


Lisa Tomoleoni Shihan, Aikido

Lisa Tomoleoni Shihan holds the rank of 6 Dan, received from Moriteru Ueshiba, Aikido Doshu. She spent over 14 years in Japan training at the Aikido World Headquarters and teaching Aikido professionally at a dojo in Tokyo. Tomoleoni Shihan is Director of Aikido Shimbokukai, and is chief instructor at the Abiding Spirit Center.
